ROD's Miles For Meso A Great Success

2nd Annual Fund-Raising Event Attracts 100 Walkers

A new Putnam County tradition is becoming a hit while it lends a helping hand.Richard O. Dorsey

ROD's Miles For Meso continues to grow in popularity.

"The event was a great success," says Missy Bowles. "We had around 100 Walkers, and everyone enjoyed a great lunch by Jimmys Catering and Concessions, and great Gospel music while others went away with some Great prizes."

Bowles holds the event each year, starting at the Eleanor Town Park. It's a fund-raiser named after her father, Richard O. Dorsey, to help in the battle against Mesothelioma, which took his life. Unfortunately, he is not alone.

"We honored 20 people who lost their lives or are still fighting this disease with a balloon memorium," says Bowles. "Two ladies from the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation joined us for the day and were very impressed with the event."

Bowles says they raised about $17,000 before expenses and will be sending approximately $15,000 to the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation soon.

"We are still receiving donations by mail and online so we don't have a final tally at this time," she explains.

But that's not all.

"Me, my mom, sister and aunt went to New York City to meet with other Meso Warriors and families to spread the word of National Mesothelioma Awareness Day Monday September 26th by meeting outside of the Today Show," says Bowles. "We were able to get a few shots on the Today show as well. There was anywhere between 80-100 others there to share this day and make others aware of this deadly cancer."

Bowles hopes next year will be bigger, better and bring more awareness to others.

"If you want to see all details and keep up with next year's event please visit our NEW website at www.RODsBenefit4Meso.webs.com and to see pictures of this years event. God bless you!"
